Most people book mobile tire service without quite knowing what to expect. Will the van fit? Do I need to be there? Is this a real installation, or a roadside patch job with a jack and a lug wrench?

Fair questions. Here’s the whole appointment, start to finish, so there are no surprises in your driveway.

The short version

A fully equipped service van pulls up to your address, sets up in the space of about two parking spots, and performs the same mount, balance, and torque procedure a shop bay would — using the same class of equipment. You don’t need to move your car, wait in a lobby, or hand over your afternoon. For a standard four-tire job, you’re looking at roughly 45 to 90 minutes, and you can be inside the whole time.

Before the appointment

When you book, a few details let us arrive with the right tires and the right hardware on board. A van that has to leave and come back isn’t much of a convenience.

What we need from you:

  1. Vehicle year, make, model, and trim. Trim matters more than people expect — it often determines wheel size and torque spec.
  2. Tire size, if you have it. It’s on the sidewall, in the format 225/65R17. A photo works fine.
  3. Whether you have wheel locks, and where the key adapter lives. This is the single most common reason an appointment stalls. It’s usually in the glovebox, the trunk well beside the spare, or the center console.
  4. The service address and where to park. A driveway, a specific spot in a workplace lot, a quiet section of street.
  5. Which service you need. A seasonal changeover of tires already mounted on their own rims is a different job than a fresh mount-and-balance onto your existing wheels.

What you don’t need to do: nothing, essentially. No cleaning, no moving the car to a special spot, no waiting outside. Leave the keys accessible if you won’t be around, and go about your day.

What’s actually in the van

This is the part that surprises people. It isn’t a jack and a toolbox.

  1. A tire changer for demounting and mounting tires onto rims, with the same bead-handling capability as a shop machine
  2. A computerized wheel balancer — the equipment that finds the weight imbalance and tells us exactly where to place counterweights
  3. An onboard generator and air compressor, so nothing needs to be plugged into your house
  4. A hydraulic jack and jack stands rated for the vehicle
  5. A calibrated torque wrench — not an impact gun set to “tight”
  6. A TPMS scan tool for reading, servicing, and relearning tire pressure sensors
  7. Valve stems, weights, cleaning and mounting compounds, and replacement TPMS service kits
  8. Storage racks for your old or off-season tires

If we’re installing new tires, they’re already in the van when we arrive.

The appointment, step by step

1. Positioning and setup. The van parks near your vehicle and the technician confirms the surface is level and solid before anything comes off the ground. Cones or markers go out if we’re on a shared lot or street.

2. Loosening and lifting. Lug nuts get broken loose while the wheels are still on the ground, then the vehicle is lifted and supported. One corner or one axle at a time — the car is never balanced on a single jack while unattended.

3. Wheel removal and inspection. Wheels come off. This is also the moment we can see things you normally can’t: brake pad thickness, rotor condition, leaking struts, torn CV boots, uneven tread wear that points at an alignment problem. If we spot something, we’ll tell you and show you. There’s no obligation attached to it.

4. Demount and mount. The old tire is broken off the bead and removed from the rim. The rim’s mating surfaces are cleaned — corrosion there is a genuine cause of slow leaks — and a new valve stem or TPMS service kit is installed. The new tire is mounted and seated to proper bead-set pressure.

5. Balancing. Every wheel goes on the balancer. Adhesive or clip-on weights are applied where the machine specifies. This is not optional and it’s not a shop upsell — an unbalanced wheel produces a vibration that gets worse with speed and chews through suspension components over time.

6. Installation and torque. Wheels go back on, hand-threaded first to avoid cross-threading, then tightened in a star pattern with a calibrated torque wrench to your manufacturer’s specification — typically somewhere between 100 and 140 Nm (roughly 75 to 100 lb-ft) for passenger vehicles. An impact gun alone can over-torque a wheel badly enough to warp a rotor or stretch a stud.

7. Pressure and TPMS. Tires are set to the pressure listed on your driver’s door jamb sticker — not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall, which is a different number entirely. Sensors are scanned, and a relearn procedure is run if your vehicle needs one so the dashboard light clears.

8. Cleanup and handoff. Tools go away, the area gets swept, and your old tires either leave with us for recycling or go where you’d like them stored. You get a receipt with the torque spec, pressures set, and anything we noticed during the inspection.

Where we can and can’t set up

Works well: a standard driveway, a residential street with a level shoulder, an office or condo surface lot, a warehouse or fleet yard.

Needs a conversation first:

  1. Underground and multi-level parking garages. Service vans usually need more vertical clearance than residential garages provide. If your only parking is underground, we’ll typically arrange to meet at the entrance or a nearby surface spot.
  2. Steep slopes. Jacking on a meaningful grade isn’t safe. A gentle driveway pitch is fine; a hillside isn’t.
  3. Gravel, dirt, grass, or soft ground. Jack stands need something solid underneath.
  4. Very tight street parking. We need roughly two vehicle lengths to work safely around your car.

If you’re not sure, send a photo of the parking area when you book. It takes ten seconds and saves a rescheduled appointment.

Weather

Rain, cold, and snow are normal working conditions — the equipment handles them and so do the technicians. The exceptions are lightning, ice that makes footing genuinely unsafe, and conditions where the vehicle can’t be stably supported. In those cases we’d rather move your appointment than do the job badly.

One thing to do afterward

Re-check your torque after about 80 to 100 km of driving. Wheels can settle slightly against the hub during the first heat cycles, and this is standard practice at every shop, not a mobile-service quirk. We’ll tell you how it’s handled — either a quick return visit or a simple check you can arrange locally.

Beyond that: watch your dashboard for a pressure warning over the first week, and if you feel any new vibration at highway speed, let us know. A balance issue is quick to correct and we’d rather hear about it than have you live with it.
